No Torch In Tibet!" Global Day of Action, June 18th 2008

Take action by carrying out one or more of the following actions during the Global Day of Action: June 18th, 2008.IOC: No Torch In Tibet!"

"IOC: No Torch In Tibet" Photo Campaign

All week, set yourself up at a busy intersection, a local landmark, or a popular public space with a nicely printed “IOC: No Torch in Tibet” sign and a camera. Ask people to have their picture taken holding the sign. Day by day, send your pictures to ioc@studentsforafreetibet.org and we'll add them to a huge collage that we'll send to the IOC headquarters in Switzerland and to every IOC Executive member's personal address.
  • Objective: As the IOC gears up to send China's tainted torch to Tibet, they'll see the range of people who are outraged that the IOC has yet to withdraw Tibet from the 2008 Olympic Torch Relay route.
  • Materials: "IOC: No Torch In Tibet!" Placard and a camera.

"IOC:No Torch In Tibet" Banner Signing

Create an interactive art piece! Take an Olympic Flag (the one with the rings) and add the message "IOC: No Torch In Tibet"  to the bottom of it. Then, get Tibetans, supporters and members of the public to sign the flag with a "bloody hand print." Display the flag throughout the week at other "IOC: No Torch in Tibet" events and actions.

  • Objective: This powerful image is meant to demonstrate how the IOC's decision to allow the torch to pass through Tibet has made the torch a symbol of bloodshed and repression.
  • Materials: White bed sheet or table cloth painted with the Olympic rings, a black marker and red paint.

IOC Walk of Shame (Daytime Action)

Have SFTers and supporters wear a T-shirt with the Olympic rings on it, accompanied by a
Jacques Rogge name tag. We'll provide a printed image of Rogge's face too. Hold the printed mask over your faces, paint your hands red, and walk slowly through campus/downtown/mall etc.

Have supporters hand out leaflets that explain the “walk of shame” and how the IOC is allowing China to use the Olympics as a political tool by approving the Tibet leg of the relay. Contact local media and take lots of photos!

  • Objective: Attract media coverage of protest/rally/demo and publicly shame Jacques Rogge and the IOC with Walk of Shame march
  • Materials: Jacques Rogge Mask, Jacques Rogge Nameplate, T-shirt with Oly Rings, and red paint.

Projection Action (Night Action)
In the evening, after dark, do a projection action on a building or landmark in your town. Project either the animation or the “blood on their hands” video from www.notorchintibet.org. Check out SFT's
"How-To Do a Projection" Guide.

The IOC's Blindspot: Tibet's Suffering

Have people take turns kneeling down in a public area, blindfolded, with a sign that reads, “International Olympic Committee: No Torch in Tibet.” Have several people dress in “high society” garb to represent the IOC (think tuxedos, cocktail dresses, pearls, lots of makeup, think gaudy!). Have these people sip from cocktail glasses as they walk around and ignore the kneeled Tibetans and the suffering they are enduring. Don’t forget to hand out leaflets to passers by!

  • Objective: The IOC continues to be silent regarding China's brutal occupation of Tibet and the recent crackdown that has left over two hundred Tibetans dead and thousands more detained or disappeared. SFT'ers will continue to publicly shame and embarrass the IOC as they continue to ignore the suffering endured by the Tibetan people.
  • Materials: Red blindfold, IOC Sign, some fancy clothes and a couple cocktail glasses.

Rogge Flash Mob
Organize a flash mob! Here's how it works...call and text as many people as you can. Have them meet at a certain place and time with Rogge masks on. Get everyone together in one spot and hold the Rogge masks over your with their hands painted red. Capture the image on video and take photos.

  • Objective: This is a good media opportunity. Get them to capture [hopefully] hundreds of people in Jacques Rogge Masks and bloody hands occupying a space at 8pm, for 8 minutes and 8 seconds.
  • Materials: Jacques Rogge mask, nameplate Oly Rings, and red paint.
