Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) works in solidarity with the Tibetan people in their struggle for freedom and independence. We are a chapter-based network of young people and activists in more than 100 countries around the world. Through education, grassroots organizing, and non-violent direct action, we campaign for Tibetans’ fundamental right to political freedom. Our role is to empower and train youth as leaders in the worldwide movement for social justice. SFT’s global network is led and coordinated by SFT Headquarters (SFT HQ) located in New York City.
DESCRIPTION: SFT is seeking a Development Director to implement and further develop our annual and long-term fundraising plans. As a dynamic, youth-led, grassroots organization, SFT relies on a diverse range of income sources and creative grassroots fundraising strategies.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
- Providing the overall strategic direction, coordination, and implementation of SFT’s fundraising program;
- Managing a part-time Development Associate and all day-to-day procedures and office systems related to fundraising, including SFT’s database, the tracking of donations, and membership services;
- Overseeing the implementation of all development plans and initiatives, including online and direct mail appeals, fundraising campaigns, major donor relations and cultivation, special event planning and organizing, grant writing, merchandise sales, and grassroots fundraising efforts;
- Motivating and supporting the staff and Board of Directors in successfully raising funds and working together as an effective and coordinated team;
- Assisting with the development of annual budgets and helping to prepare financial reports;
- Other tasks as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors degree or equivalent;
- Minimum three years work experience, ideally in a development and managerial role;
- Experience creating and implementing successful development plans, strategies, and initiatives;
- Experience with special event planning and cultivating relationships with major donors;
- Exhibited commitment to Tibetan freedom and understanding of Students for a Free Tibet’s mission.
SKILLS AND CHARACTERISTICS:
- Comfortable working under pressure and managing a diverse array of tasks with shifting priorities;
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills;
- Good computer skills, including database management and spreadsheets (website design is an asset);
- Detail oriented with strong organization skills;
- Ability to supervise people and work well in a team;
- Outgoing, creative, positive, and motivated.
