The day before, we had arranged to paste all of the NGOs’ posters up around Dharamsala at night, creating a Tibetan Democracy Wall. The ex-political prisoners decided that they were going in broad daylight, alone. The video footage that Karma Sichoe took was so moving: many of them had been imprisoned in Tibet for doing exactly this, and for many, it was the first time they had been involved in any political action since their release.

From live benefit shows, board meeting pow-wows, and conference planning – to Milarepa-SFT bus tours with buzz queen nuns, an unforgettable late, stormy evening with Palden Gyatso, and the non-stop good Tibetan eats – I am truly grateful for all the unique, funny memories during my time with SFT. Chapter and year joined: I first heard about the plight of Tibet through Amnesty International, which I joined when I was 15 or 16. I didn't know about SFT until college. When I couldn't find a chapter in my ultra-conservative school (Texas A&M U) in po-dunk town College Station, TX (population 100,000 - of which 45,000 were students @ A&M), I decided to start up my own chapter, which I headed for 2 years. I moved out to Los Angeles, CA, where I became a member of LA Friends of Tibet. I received the Volunteer of the Year Award, and, after just 1 year of volunteering, was asked to join the Board of Directors. 2 years into the board, I was asked to become Vice President of the organization. I just expired my term as VP and Director this past November 04, but I am still the Volunteer Coordinator and an active volunteer.
SFT Highlight: My best memory of SFT (next to seeing John Hocevar in a purple dress!) was drudging in the rain and mud while helping Free Tibet Action Campers take down their tents in Malibu, CA. What team work! The moment wasn't directly related to the Tibetan cause, but it definitely proved to show how committed we are to each other as, not only activists, but as human beings. Now, this is when you say "aaaaawwwwwww", right??? Ha ha!
Occupation: Case Manager
Age: 29
Address: Los Angeles, CA

Name: Thupten Nyima, aka Thupten N Chakrishar
Chapter and year joined: 1997, Dharamsala Chapter
SFT highlight: The best memory I have is of 2002, when after finishing school, I and Tenzin Choeying started an SFT Chapter in Delhi University. On the inaugural day, we were overwhelmed by hundreds of Indian students signing up for SFT membership, collecting/reading materials related to Tibet, writing messages and signing on the huge banner we had created for the imprisoned Panchen Lama. Hundreds of Indian students showed up, demonstrating full support. It was a huge success. That is the finest memory I have of SFT back in India.
