[Amherst] Tibetan Uprising Day
March 10 @ 10:30 am - 4:00 pm
Tibetan Uprising Day, observed on March 10, commemorates the 1959 Tibetan uprising against the presence of the People’s Republic of China in Tibet. The failure of the armed rebellion ultimately resulted in a violent crackdown on Tibetan independence movements, and the flight of the Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso into exile.
This year marks the 58th anniversary of the Tibetan people’s peaceful uprising against the repression and occupation of Tibet by the People’s Republic of China. Amherst, Massachusetts will be hosting Walk for Tibet to commemorate Tibetan Uprising Day. The walk will begin at 10:30 AM from Amherst Common. The walk will arrive at Northampton City Hall at 2:30 PM. Northampton Mayor David Narkewicz will address the gathering and reading the City’s Proclamation declaring March 10 as “Tibet Day” and the city will raise the Tibetan National Flag, which will fly for one week. The Select Board of Town of Amherst and U.S. Congressman Jim McGovern are also expected to attend the portion of the walk at Northampton City Hall.
