On the eve of China’s 19th Party Congress, Tibetans and supporters around the world have joined together to protest Xi Jinping’s 5 years of oppressive rule in Tibet. Students for a Free Tibet (SFT), along with other leading Tibetan NGOs in Dharamsala, released a joint statement to highlight the worsening situation in Tibet under Xi’s dictatorship and to call on the global community to strengthen their protests and actions against Xi’s unjust rule.
SFT activists in New York staged a strong street action outside the Chinese Consulate featuring a giant bloodbath with several dead bodies to symbolize Xi’s flagrant rights abuses in Tibet during his first five year term. Through these actions and events, we have a sent a clear message to the international community that Xi Jinping is not the saviour of the free world, but a dictator of the unfree world, and must be held fully accountable for the serious and outrageous crackdowns implemented across Tibet.
Earlier, with International Tibet Network, we released a new report, “Xi Jinping: Five Years of Failure in Tibet,” which describes the severity of the situation in Tibet. This report underlines Xi’s responsibility for the intense crackdown that has deepened over the past five years. We have submitted this report to various foreign offices around the world.
The ongoing CCP 19th Party Congress in Beijing is nothing but a political theatre set up to further consolidate Xi Jinping’s power. What we know is that during the meeting, there is a complete lockdown by military personnel and an increase in surveillance of digital communication, not in only China, but also in Tibet. Travel restrictions were imposed on Tibetans traveling internally and also foreigners coming to Tibet. In the lead of up to the conference there were military drills in front of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet, in the name of protecting the CCP 19th Party Congress. Such desperate acts of military threats to peaceful Tibetans show how insecure the CCP regime is, even after over 60 years of illegal occupation in Tibet.
These actions around the world, in protest of Xi and the ongoing 19th Party Congress, will bring more international attention and support. Through these actions, we call on the international community to stand on the right side of history – we call on them to stand with Tibet. We, at SFT, commit to continuing to expose Xi’s real face and to stand in solidarity with Tibetan people inside Tibet in their fight for freedom.
